THE MONEY: Gores may be a resident of Holmby Hills, but his heart seems these days seems to be in Michigan by way of his ownership of the Detroit Pistons. Gores appears to have spared no expense toward revitalizing the team after acquiring 100% ownership in 2015, having recently spearheaded the effort to sign NBA legend Monty Williams as head coach. Gores’ charitable efforts have been targeted at support for the team’s homefront; in February, Henry Ford Health announced that it would partner with Gores to drive support for a $2.5 billion development project in Detroit’s New City neighborhood.
THE BUZZ: There’s no evidence Gore’s been slacking at his day job: Platinum Equity, the private equity investment firm Gores founded in 1995, wrote in a July press release that it was now managing approximately $47 billion in assets, up from $36 billion last July. The company reported on its website that it led $6.5 billion in deal activity in the first quarter, and in the last 12 months had made three platform acquisitions, 48 add-ons and six divestitures.
