THE LATEST: Shields’ investment firm Griffin Capital hit several milestones over the past year. It raised and issued $1.6 billion in investor capital in 2018; one of its real estate funds surpassed $3 billion in assets under management; and the firm surpassed $10 billion of capital inflows to its investment programs and funds in the last five years.

BACKGROUND: Shields founded Griffin Capital in 1995. The firm has owned, managed, sponsored, or co-sponsored approximately $16.8 billion in assets, and it sponsors or co-sponsors several public, non-listed real estate investment trusts. The investment and real estate team have completed more than 650 deals valued at more than $22 billion. Before founding Griffin, Shields was a senior vice president and head of the Structured Real Estate Finance Group at Jefferies & Co. Inc.

WORTH NOTING: Shields is chairman emeritus of the Investment Program Association and a Policy Advisory Board member for the Fisher Center for Real Estate.
