Reddy, a cardiologist, founded Prime Healthcare in 2001 with a mission to buy distressed hospitals and improve their financial condition so they could keep their doors open. The company has grown to 45 hospitals and 300 outpatient centers in 14 states, becoming the fifth-largest for-profit health system in the nation. In Los Angeles, Prime Healthcare operates five hospitals. Reddy founded the Prime Healthcare Foundation, a public charity that owns 14 Prime Healthcare hospitals, as well as the nonprofit Dr. Prem Reddy Family Foundation, which has donated to charities supporting health care and education. The foundations have assets of $1.3 billion. Earlier this year, the Foundation announced a deal to acquire a health system in Maine.
