LA500 2025: Alberto Carvalho

Alberto Carvalho

Superintendent
Los Angeles Unified School District

As the leader of the country’s second-largest school district, Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Carvalho guided over 500,000 students and 78,000 employees through the aftermath of the unprecedented lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic and the raging fires that displaced students and staff in January. He assumed the position of superintendent in 2022, working to improve attendance after post-Covid absenteeism surged through the LAUSD system. He also required every school to stock Naxalone, an over-the-counter drug meant to treat narcotic overdoses in emergencies, after a student died from a fentanyl overdose on a high school campus. Carvalho also bolstered cybersecurity at the school district after a major ransomware attack.
