Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope is one of Los Angeles County’s most important engines for biomedical discovery, anchored at City of Hope’s 89.5-acre Duarte campus. As City of Hope’s basic and translational research arm, Beckman brings more than 60 years of basic science expertise to an NCI- designated comprehensive cancer center and includes 10 departments and centers led by internationally acclaimed scientists.
Beckman’s strength is the breadth of discovery happening in Duarte and the speed with which that science can move toward clinical application. Its research spans cancer biology, molecular medicine, cancer genetics and epigenetics, immuno-oncology, hematologic malignancies translational science, computational and quantitative medicine, precision medicine, diabetes, stem cell therapy, DNA repair, radiation biology, imaging, HIV and rare diseases, mechanisms of drug action and neurogenesis. These programs help uncover disease drivers, identify therapeutic targets and support the development of more precise, less toxic treatment approaches.
City of Hope’s Southern California research enterprise includes 1,758 researchers, with Beckman serving as a central research anchor on the Duarte campus. The campus includes more than 30 buildings totaling approximately 831,000 square feet for laboratory-based, population-based and clinical research activities, with 60 of its 89.5 acres dedicated to medical use. Beckman has also received $207,226,200 in CIRM funding, underscoring its leadership in stem cell, regenerative medicine and translational research.
Beckman’s proximity to City of Hope’s clinical programs helps connect discovery science with patient care. In FY25, City of Hope supported over 730 clinical studies and clinical trials, including early-phase studies that help move promising ideas toward patients.
