Steven D. Lavine

Former President, California Institute of the Arts

Steven D. Lavine served as president of CalArts from 1988 until his retirement after the graduation of the Class of 2017. Before coming to the institution, he served as associate director for arts and humanities at the Rockefeller Foundation and as an assistant professor of English and American literature at the University of Michigan. He has served on the boards of the American Council for Education, Americans for the Arts, National Public Radio’s Working Group on the Future, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cotsen Family Foundation, KCRW, KCET, Idyllwild Arts, and Villa Aurora, and on the visiting committee of the J. Paul Getty Museum.
