Mattel Inc. said Friday it bought Sekkoia SAS, which makes the board game Blokus. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

El Segundo-based Mattel’s acquisition of the French game maker includes Blokus Trigon, Blokus 3D, Blokus Duo, and Blokus Giant. Under the terms of the deal, Mattel also acquired rights to the Whac-A-Mole game from Bob’s Space Racers Inc., and said it plans to develop other games based on the arcade table game.

Blokus, launched in September 2000, is now one of the best-selling board games in the world, Mattel said, and has been awarded more than 20 honors from international parenting and toy associations since its debut.

Comprised of a square board containing 400 squares and 84 pieces, Blokus challenges players to think strategically to outsmart their opponent.

“The addition of these fantastic brands reinforces Mattel’s commitment to offering games that are both engaging and entertaining for people of all ages,” Tim Kilpin, a Mattel Brands executive, said in a statement.

Shares of Mattel were down 14 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $15.42 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
