THE MONEY:
Saban is chairman and chief executive of Saban Capital Group. The firm’s private equity investments include Saban Films, Saban Music Group and Saban Ventures. In February, Saban was part of a group that sold Univision Communications Inc. in a deal that was reportedly valued at less than $10 billion. Saban Capital Group and four other firms had paid $13.7 billion for the Spanish-language media company in 2007. Saban had reportedly invested $250 million in Univision, and representatives said his stake was worth $700 million at the time of sale. He will reportedly walk away with $50 million after taxes.
THE BUZZ:
Saban, who was born in Egypt and moved to Los Angeles by way of Israel in 1983, formed Saban Entertainment in 1988. He was the creator of the Power Rangers brand, and Saban Capital Group sold Power Rangers and other entertainment brands to Hasbro Inc. in a deal valued at $522 million in May 2018. Saban and his wife, Cheryl, have contributed more than $500 million to philanthropic efforts, including a 2017 gift of $50 million to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which is now scheduled to open in 2021.
