The Oaktree Capital Group co-chairman and chief investment officer retains a significant stake in the firm he co-founded with Howard Marks following its acquisition by Brookfield Asset Management late last year. The roughly $4.9 billion deal left Karsh and other management with a collective 38.8% ownership in the downtown-based asset manager, although they maintain operating control of the firm as an independent entity. THE BUZZ: Oaktree Capital Group is by some estimates the world’s largest investor in distressed securities. Karsh leads the distressed debt practice at Oaktree, which in February established a wholly owned subsidiary in China and became the first company to participate in Beijing’s Qualified Domestic Limited Partner scheme. In July, Karsh and his wife, Martha, donated $25 million to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for digestive and liver disease treatment research. Earlier in the year, they made a $10 million donation to Howard University to support STEM education for underrepresented minority groups. It was the largest single donation in the university’s history. The Karsh Family Foundation has donated or pledged nearly $300 million since its founding in 1998.
