The largest container ship to ever dock at a North American port arrived in Los Angeles over the weekend, NBC reports. The CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin, which surpasses the Empire State Building’s height at 1,300 feet, pulled into the Port of Los Angeles on Saturday and will remain there for four days.
According to the outlet, Mayor Eric Garcetti said the ship’s arrival marked a significant moment in the city’s history.
“It’s fitting that the largest container ship to ever traverse North American waters would make its first call right here at the Port of Los Angeles,” Garcetti said in a press release.
“The arrival of the CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin sends a powerful message that our port stands among the world’s greatest, and that we are prepared to continue growing and adapting to the demands of our global economy.”
