Downtown L.A. apparel manufacturer and retailer American Apparel Inc. has confirmed it plans to close its store on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, which was the company’s first U.S. retail location when it opened 12 years ago.

American Apparel filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October and has closed several other stores to cut costs.

An American Apparel spokesperson said, “This store closure is a next step in implementing our previously announced turnaround plan, which includes closing underperforming locations and investing in new stores in promising areas.”

As of June 30, the retailer operated 237 retail stores in 20 countries, 133 stores of which were in the U.S. That was compared to 242 total retail stores as of Dec. 31, 2014.

As part of a turnaround plan announced in the summer that included $30 million of cost-cutting initiatives, American Apparel said it would close underperforming retail locations and streamline its workforce. It also said at the time it would consider adding new stores in “profitable fast-growing territories while reducing its footprint in unprofitable and over-saturated markets.”

The Echo Park store opened in 2003 just days after American Apparel’s first retail space in Montreal, Canada.
