Marine Clerks at Ports Threaten Strike

Unionized marine clerks working at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach on Tuesday threatened to go on strike if a contract is not reached with the group representing 14 shippers and terminal operators.

The union and employers are expected to continue bargaining today in an attempt to a avert a strike before the current, three-year labor pact expires at midnight.

The International Longshore Warehouse Union’s Local 63 Office Clerical Unit, which represents about 950 marine clerks working at the twin ports. A strike could lead to stalled operations at the nation’s busiest port complex and significantly damage an economy that’s barely recovering from a two-year recession.
