Passenger traffic at Los Angeles International Airport rose slightly last month from a year earlier, as a still struggling economy continued to be a drag on both passenger and air cargo activity, according to figures released Wednesday.

Los Angeles World Airports, the agency that operates the facility, said domestic and international traffic combined were up less than 3 percent in October, with a total 5.1 million passengers flying through LAX.

Roughly 3.7 million domestic passengers traveled through the airport, compared with 1.4 million international travelers, LAWA said.

Air cargo traffic continued to decline, down 10 percent in October. Most of the loss continued to be in freight cargo, with mail cargo down 4.8 percent.

The agency, which did not announce figures on calendar year-to-date basis, said passenger traffic since its fiscal year began in July was off 5 percent from the same period a year earlier. Air cargo activity is down 6.5 percent.
