Gogii Inc., which makes a popular social messaging app for cell phones, said that it has raised an additional $15 million in a third round of financing.
The Marina del Rey company developed textPlus, which allows users to text others in community chat groups, share photos, and other activities. The app runs on iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Android smart phones.
The company said late Thursday that the round was led by GRP Partners and included Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Matrix Partners. Its last funding round raised $8.3 million in December 2009; the company has raised $28.3 million to date.
Gogii was launched in 2008 by Scott Lahman, Austin Murray, and Zack Norman, who were founders of Jamdat, a Los Angeles mobile entertainment developer that went public in 2004 and was acquired by video game maker Electronic Arts for $680 million in 2006.
“We invested in Gogii’s massive scale and its seasoned team,” GRP partner Mark Suster said in a statement. “This isn’t a couple of rookies with a one-trick-pony app. This is a former senior team from Activision, the same guys who also created Jamdat and sold it to EA, quietly building one of the most popular mobile social platforms we’ve ever seen.”
