Hulu Ends Free Viewing

In a move to align itself with its paid-subscription rivals, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, television-streaming service Hulu of Santa Monica has ended its free-to-view streaming service.

The television streaming service launched as a free-to-view ad supported business in 2007, but has since added a $7.99 per month subscription subsidized by commercials and an $11.99 per month subscription service without any ads. Some television shows on Hulu were previously free, while others and movies required a paid subscription to view.

Hulu is also set to launch an online service to stream broadcast and cable TV channels, reported the Wall Street Journal in May. Walt Disney Co. and 21st Century Fox, both with ownership stakes in Hulu, are in negotiation to provide programming, including channels ABC, ESPN, Disney Channel, Fox News, FX, and Fox Sports.

Though television shows can no longer be viewed for free on Hulu, some content licensed by the company will be available for free via a new deal with Yahoo Inc. on a website launched Monday called Yahoo View.
