RadNet Buys U.K. Imaging Firm

Sawtelle-based RadNet buys a U.K.-based imaging company.

Sawtelle-based diagnostic imaging and radiology company RadNet Inc. last month made its latest acquisition in Europe.

On Nov. 11, RadNet announced it had purchased London-based Cimar UK, which provides cloud-based health care image management solutions. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cimar will be integrated into DeepHealth, RadNet’s wholly owned subsidiary specializing in artificial intelligence-powered health informatics.

RadNet, which was founded in 1981, is best known for its network of 407 owned and/or operated outpatient diagnostic imaging centers in eight states: Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Texas. But it has been increasingly active overseas in recent years on the artificial intelligence front.

Cimar, which is short for cloud-based image management archiving repository, deploys an image management infrastructure that provides data connectivity and interoperability to enable clinical AI and other uses across more than 50% of United Kingdom National Health Service Trusts and 80% of U.K. private hospital groups.

‘Powerful step’

“Radiologists and care teams are under immense pressure, often working with outdated or siloed tools, and are not set up to keep pace with rising demand,” Kees Wesdorp, chief executive of RadNet’s digital health division, said in the announcement. “By acquiring Cimar, DeepHealth is taking a powerful step in redefining imaging-based care through a portfolio of solutions that connect clinical and operational intelligence to enable faster, more accurate diagnoses and improve efficiency.”

Cimar is the latest European acquisition for RadNet. Most of the acquired companies – like Cimar – have been folded into RadNet’s Deep Health division. RadNet acquired Cambridge, Massachusetts-based AI firm DeepHealth in 2020 and set about creating a major AI division.

Last year, the company acquired London-based Khelron Medical Technologies, which uses AI programs to identify malignancies in mammogram screenings.

In 2022, RadNet made three European purchases. First was a pair of AI companies based in the Netherlands: Quantib, which focused on AI technology for brain MRIs and to diagnose prostate cancer; and Aidence, which specialized in pulmonary nodule management and lung cancer screening. The other purchase that year was of Heart and Lung Imaging, a London-based teleradiology network focused on lung cancer screening.
