Sports app developer Hopscotch of El Segundo announced on Monday that it signed up more than 40 athletic programs as customers last month.
The developer’s app provides breaking sports news, season schedules, player statistics, live scores and promotions, as well as the ability to buy tickets. The company said many teams will use their own branded version of the app for the first time this season, including the University of Oregon, Auburn University, Baylor University, University of Mississippi and Michigan State University.
Sports fans have grown accustomed to following their favorite sports teams on their smartphones, said Michael Thompson, the University of Mississippi’s senior associate athletic director, in a statement.
“The phone is the most personal doorway to our fans,” he said. “Today’s consumer wants to customize everything, so why should our app be any different?”
The Hopscotch platform also provides in-venue functionality such as in-seat ordering from concession stands, parking pass purchases and stadium navigation.
The firm has raised $12.5 million from investors including Mosaik Partners since its founding in 2014.
