Special Report: Sustainability – Sun setting?

The solar industry has brightened in recent years as prices dropped and technology improved. But now L.A.’s solar installation companies wonder if their prospects will dim when new regulations that slash subsidies kick in next month. Some local companies said that to make the transition, they will have to work harder to strengthen their value proposition to would-be customers. Others believe commercial, rather than residential solar installations, will be a bigger part of their business. “It just makes sense for heavy users, as you see in the commercial market, to control their costs long term,” said Edwin Baranian, chief executive of American Solar Power in Cypress Park. In this Special Report, the Business Journal profiles local solar businesses, looks at the new regulations and interviews the chief executive of one of the largest solar companies in Los Angeles.
