OSI to Manufacture Suicide Bomb Detector

Rapiscan Systems Inc., a Torrance supplier of security inspection systems, announced Tuesday that it has added a suicide-bomb detector to its portfolio.

Rapiscan Systems, a division of Hawthorne’s OSI Systems, Inc., will manufacture CounterBomber, a radar-based threat detection system that can identify concealed person-borne threats, such as suicide vests, at a distance – that is, outside of the potential blast radius. The technology was originally designed to identify suicide bombs, but it can also detect other concealed threats such as handguns, machine pistols, pipe bombs and grenades, the company said in a statement.

The company said the system is ideal for high profile locations such as government buildings, transit stations and military installations that are targets for terrorist attacks.

The technology has been used by the U.S. military since 2008, but does not appear to have been commercially available until now.
