The Glendale City Council on Tuesday voted to ban the use of plastic bags at grocery stores and other retailers starting next year, joining a growing number of communities around the state.

The ban, which goes into effect Jan. 1, would apply only to grocery stores, large pharmacies, and most convenience stores. In addition, farmers markets, city-sponsored events or any event held on city property will be banned from offering single-use plastic shopping bags.

Glendale’s ordinance is modeled off the Los Angeles County ban for unincorporated area that took effect in 2011. Similar bans have been approved in Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Long Beach and Pasadena. Cupertino in Northern California also approved a bag ban on Tuesday.

The council also voted to enact a 10 cent fee for each paper bag requested by a shopper as a way to encourage the use of reusable bags.
