Billionaire investor Ron Burkle has declared that he has no plan to acquire control of Barnes & Noble, the nation’s largest bookstore chain.
Even with that assertion, Burkle continues to heat up the the war of words in his proxy fight over Barnes & Noble, contending that the company’s management was trying “to smear our reputation and mischaracterize our reasons for nominating” three directors to the nine-member board.
Burkle’s investment firm, Yucaipa Companies, in a letter to shareholders on Monday, describes as “absolutely false” Barnes & Noble’s claim that he was working with another Los Angeles investment firm, Aletheia Reserch and Management, to form a controlling bloc to “steal” the company.
