Nasty Gal, the downtown Los Angeles women’s clothing retailer, has closed a $16 million Series C funding round to help fuel growth and expansion.
The round was led by Ron Johnson, chief executive of e-commerce startup Enjoy and a former J.C. Penney and Apple executive. Johnson has joined Nasty Gal’s board. Index Ventures also participated in the funding round.
Nasty Gal began as Sophia Amoruso’s personal eBay store in 2006 and quickly gained popularity by styling vintage pieces to young shoppers’ tastes. The online store has since become an e-commerce powerhouse that posted more than $100 million in revenue in 2012, though it has reportedly seen slower growth in recent years. Nasty Gal opened its first brick-and-mortar shop on Melrose Avenue in Beverly Grove in December.
“Over the past 18 months Ron has become a valued mentor and friend,” said Amoruso, Nasty Gal’s chairwoman and former chief executive, in a statement. “I can’t imagine anyone more qualified to support our growth in this next phase.”
Nasty Gal has raised a total of $65 million to date.
