California, the Final Chapter: For those who have already checked out the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s sweeping exhibition, “Made in California: Art, Image and Identity 1900-2000,” a crucial piece was missing the present. LACMA opens the fifth installment in its riveting California story, 1980-2000, on Nov. 12. The new exhibit considers the impact of globalization and L.A.’s increasingly diverse and polarized population. It includes billboards by Robbie Conal and Pat Ward Williams, and all 30 of Chris Burden’s oversized LAPD uniforms. More information: (323) 857-6000 or www.lacma.org.

Long Live the Silents: It’s a little known fact that the only silent movie theater left in the United States is in L.A. at 611 N. Fairfax Ave. near Melrose Avenue. The Silent Movie Theater, re-opened last year by Charlie Lustman, celebrates its first anniversary Nov. 3-5 with a screening of Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times.” In the 1936 comedy classic, the Tramp struggles to live in modern industrial society with the help of a young homeless woman. Tribal Art in Santa Monica: A vast collection of art, antiques and artifacts from around the world will be on display as part of the “Tribal, Folk and Textile Arts Show” at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium from Nov. 10-12. Over 70 galleries and dealers bring pre-1940 works such as Tibetan turquoise jewelry, Nepalese shaman masks, Middle Eastern textiles, Oceanic terra-cotta sculptures and American folk art.
