The Business Journal raises the curtain on the legal stars who work in L.A.’s entertainment industry.

IVY KAGAN BIERMAN, 51

Firm: Loeb & Loeb LLP

Law School: Northwestern University

Selected Clients: Bunim/Murray Productions, FremantleMedia North America Inc., 19 Entertainment Ltd., Dick Clark Productions, Hasbro Studios LLC, Cartoon Network, Experian Inc., Netflix Inc., Lucasfilm Ltd.

Years in Practice: 26

Most Challenging Matter: Helping clients resist union organizing efforts that sometimes include public smear campaigns, spurious administrative claims, intimidation and threats.

Best Career Moments: I was the only female labor lawyer on the short list of entertainment industry labor lawyers in the Hollywood Reporter Power Lawyer issue. Other highlights: Shutting down a picket in only an hour. I was able to do that given the good relationship I developed with that particular union. Being the only female in the executive dining room at a Fortune 500 company and realizing that I had become the CEO’s right-hand adviser. It was bittersweet because there should have been other female executives at the company!

Worst: Defending a company in a discrimination and wrongful termination lawsuit after the company fired a female employee while she was in the hospital with cancer. When she dropped her case, the client was thrilled. But I couldn’t share in the client’s joy given the circumstances.

Longest Workday: Twenty-three hours preparing for a hearing in a very contentious matter.

If I Weren’t an Attorney: When I was young, I dreamed of dancing and singing on Broadway. But now that I am older, I would probably be a producer. I might be broke under either scenario!
