L.A. Times Launches Roku Channel

The Los Angeles Times on Thursday launched an Internet-TV channel available on Roku set-top boxes.

The free, ad-supported “Los Angeles Times Originals” video channel features entertainment, lifestyle, sports and documentary videos, as well as a real-time breaking news feature. There are about 70 videos available at launch. The videos are also available through the Times’ website.

The Times sees video as an opportunity for growth as advertising dollars leave print. Last month, the newspaper announced a distribution deal with DirecTV for its documentaries. The outlet has also experimented with YouTube channels.

Jennifer Collins, vice president of digital development at the Times’ parent company, Tribune Publishing of Chicago, said the deal with Roku will significantly add to the Times’ video viewership.

“It’s a priority for us to extend the reach of Los Angeles Times Originals across platforms where video is consumed,” Collins said in a statement. “Distribution with Roku puts us in front of an active and engaged audience that streams content on their Roku players an average of 48 hours per month.”
