Sean Astin became the national president of the actor’ union in September 2025, succeeding Fran Drescher. Previously serving on the negotiating committee during the 2023 actors’ strike, Astin has been heavily involved with the union for the past seven years and is currently leading efforts to protect actors from artificial intelligence in the industry. The “Lord of the Rings” actor’s career took off in 1985, when he starred in “The Goonies” after an earlier debut in “Please Don’t Hit Me, Mom.” Beyond acting and producing, Astin also served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the National Center for Family Literacy, the Creative Coalition, and Los Angeles Valley College’s Patrons Association and Arts Council.
