Mayor
City of Los Angeles
Mayor Karen Bass has served as the 43rd mayor of Los Angeles since December 2022. She announced her re-election bid in December, running on affordability, public safety, and wildfire preparedness – the latter of which she’s faced intense local and national scrutiny amid the L.A. wildfires last year. She has since touted what her office describes as the fastest disaster cleanup in modern California history. In her current term, her administration has pursued reductions in street homelessness through the Inside Safe initiative and championed downtown revitalization. A former U.S. representative and speaker pro tempore of the California state Assembly, Bass launched her tenure with a sweeping executive order to accelerate affordable housing production, which was codified into a city ordinance in 2023.
