Gunning for Something Different

When you think video games, you think shoot-’em-ups, right? You don’t think about a game that teaches spirituality and healing based on the teachings of Deepak Chopra, do you?

But THQ Inc. in Agoura Hills recently announced it will produce such a game in partnership with Curious Pictures, a New York entertainment company that produces graphics and animation, along with Chopra’s media firm.

So how did that unlikely partnership develop?

After a producer from Curious Pictures appeared on Chopra’s Sirius Radio talk show, they decided it would be a good idea to develop a video game that would guide players through Chopra’s mind-body healing teachings. Curious Pictures, which had done work for THQ on its first-person shooter game “Home Front,” then brought the project to the video game company for development and sales.

Although a Chopra game might not seem comparable to some of THQ’s first-person shooters, spokeswoman Julie MacMeden said in a statement that it fits with the company’s casual titles, which include “The Biggest Loser” and “Jeopardy.”

“We immediately understood the vision and objective,” MacMeden said. “THQ is trying to expand our lifestyle category and we felt this game would enhance that portfolio.”
