The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office has reached a $450,000 settlement with a South L.A. nursing home alleged to have illegally discharged homeless patients.
The settlement announced June 28 followed allegations that Avalon Villa Care Center at 12029 S. Avalon Blvd. failed to properly discharge homeless patients while failing to meet certain quality-of-care standards.
“Patient dumping is inhumane and must be stopped,” said Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer, in a statement. “Leaving the most vulnerable patients to fend for themselves is unacceptable.”
Under terms of the settlement, prosecutors say the Avalon Villa Care Center has agreed to pay $450,000, including $350,000 to train and hire staff familiar with homeless discharge and quality-of-care protocols, and $50,000 to help house homeless patients. It must also comply with numerous health care conditions.
By law, it is illegal to dump patients in Los Angeles. The city attorney has settled seven patient dumping cases, while securing nearly $4 million in settlements from defendant hospitals.
