Governor Jerry Brown on Oct. 11 announced the appointment of 33 California superior court judges, including 15 in Los Angeles County.
The new judges include:
- Craig S. Barnes, a partner at Clyde and Co.
- Mario Barrera, a deputy alternate public defender at the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender’s Office
- Diego H. Edber, a commissioner at the Los Angeles County Superior Court
- Jill T. Feeney, a deputy chief of the Major Frauds Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California
- Sabina A. Helton, a shareholder at Buchalter APC.
- Carolina V. Lugo, a deputy district attorney at the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office
- Brenda J. Penny, a commissioner at the Los Angeles County Superior Court
- Michael R. Powell, a deputy public defender at the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office
- Anne K. Richardson, a director of the Consumer Law Project at Public Counsel
- Robert Serna, a deputy district attorney at the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office
- Michelle S. Short, a commissioner at the Los Angeles County Superior Court
- Timothy M. Weiner, a commissioner at the Los Angeles County Superior Court
Three judges received interim appointments for judgeships in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, filling vacancies on the court. Those include
- Maria Lucy Armendariz, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Donna F. Goldstein
- Danielle R. A. Gibbons, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Mark G. Nelson
- Rene C. Gilbertson, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Robert Higa
Federal appointments
The Governor’s appointments came a day after President Donald J. Trump named several new judges to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
Two judges were named to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit: Daniel P. Collins, a partner in the Los Angeles, California, office of Munger, Tolles & Olson; and Kenneth Kiyul Lee, partner in the Los Angeles, California, office of Jenner & Block.
And three judges were named to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California: Stanley Blumenfeld, judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court; Jeremy B. Rosen, partner in the Los Angeles, California, office of Horvitz & Levy; and Mark C. Scarsi partner in the Los Angeles, California, office of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCoy
