Marina Bogorad was named among Billboard’s Top Music Lawyers of 2023 for her work on the copyright infringement litigation against Taylor Swift. The litigation achieved widespread coverage because Bogorad scored several victories for her clients, including a reversal of the dismissal by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and a denial of summary judgment. The case focused on the chorus of Taylor Swift’s smash hit Shake It Off and involved groundbreaking issues of copyright ability concerning short phrases, including Bogorad’s clients’ lyrics “Players gonna play, haters gonna hate.”
The Taylor Swift litigation has been just one of the several appellate victories Bogorad achieved on behalf of her client. Another includes a published appellate decision applying the controversial SLAPP statute.
