The Walt Disney Co. has signed a multi-year agreement with Chinese Internet retailer Alibaba to distribute its content through a Mickey Mouse-shaped streaming device called DisneyLife.
The Internet-connected device will provide access to Disney and Pixar movies, animated series, games, e-books and songs, as well as to booking services to Disney-themed tours, theme parks and resorts. The device will cost $125 and will include a one year subscription to content.
“DisneyLife directly connects us to China’s digital population and provides millions of kids and families the ability to explore and engage with Disney,” said Luke Kang, managing director of Walt Disney Co. Greater China, in a statement.
Disney has been expanding its business in China, opening Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005 and planning to open Shanghai Disneyland next spring, but has had limited distribution of its content in the country. Partnering with Alibaba will give Disney access to one of the largest customer bases in the world’s second largest economy.
