Bass is Los Angeles’ 43rd mayor and the first woman to hold the post. Since taking office in 2022 she has had to face the city’s homelessness crisis as well as wildfires and the subsequent effort to rebuild the Pacific Palisades. In 2024, she was able to reduce street homelessness by 10%. She has also increased the number of city services delivered. Prior to being elected mayor, Bass won election to the state Assembly in 2004 and served two years as Assembly Speaker. She won election to Congress in 2010, serving South Los Angeles and Culver City. Bass also helped found the nonprofit Community Coalition in 1990.
