Matheny succeeded Michael Rich, who retired last June, as the sixth
CEO and president of the 75-year-old nonprofit, nonpartisan research
organization based in Santa Monica. An economist, technologist and
national security expert, Matheny recently led the White House policy
on technology and national security at the National Security Council
and the Office of Science and Technology. Matheny has served on
many nonpartisan boards and committees, including the National Security
Commission on Artificial Intelligence, to which he was appointed
by Congress in 2018.
