Doug Bowers is president and chief executive of Banc of California. The veteran banking executive is working to transform Banc of California to a more community-focused commercial bank. Bowers was previously the chief executive of Square 1 Bank, where he expanded the bank’s national footprint, raising $120 million in capital through a 2014 initial public offering and growing the bank from $1.6 billion to more than $4 billion in assets in fewer than five years. He spent more than 25 years at Bank of America, including as head of large corporate banking for the United States, Canada and Latin America, and as specialized product executive with responsibility over seven divisions generating more than $3 billion in revenue and $1.4 billion in net income.
What was your proudest moment?
My proudest moment in my career, so far, was when we took my former bank, Square 1, public. We raised capital at one of the highest multiples done in numerous years in the banking industry.

I am a proud graduate of Ball State University, Go Cardinals; Muncie, Ind.
What is your next project?
Accelerating our journey in Banc of California’s quest to be California’s Bank, is at the forefront of each of our exciting projects across the enterprise. Our being headquartered in California, providing access to local decision makers and offering the unique products and services to fit California businesses is our differentiator.
Who is your hero?
My hero in business is the man who transformed the national financial landscape, Hugh McColl. Not only was he a fearless, tireless and great leader, he led with compassion and integrity.
What do you like best about Los Angeles?
Los Angeles is a dynamic wellspring of varied cultures and people. It’s an area that exemplifies forward thinking and opportunity that is unique to California and is truly America at its finest.
