An Arizona Indian community has selected Perini Building Company Inc. to develop and construct a new $135 million casino and resort hotel at the tribe’s Vee Quiva Casino near Phoenix.

The subsidiary of Sylmar’s Tutor Perini Corp. said on Thursday that the tribal council of the Gila River Indian Community gave final approval to Perini to build a 90-room hotel and new casino at the 70-acre site in Laveen, which is home to an older casino. The project is scheduled to open next year.

“As one of the largest builders of hospitality and gaming projects in the nation, we anticipate a seamless process,” said Ken Schacherbauer, vice president of Tutor Perini Building, in a statement. “We are also pleased to be working with the Friedmutter Group, the project architect. (We) have worked together since 1994 on a number of major resort and casino projects.”

Tutor Perini last week reported a 48 percent jump in first quarter revenue, but moved to a $1.2 million loss compared with a $6.9 million profit a year earlier.

Shares closed up 2 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $12.03 on the New York Stock Exchange.
