THE MONEY: Buoyant advertising markets for broadcast and cable TV pushed up media mogul’s net worth by more than $1 billion as Viacom and CBS stocks rose sharply. Redstone owns more than 40 million shares in each company. Salary and bonuses totaled sweet $24 million.

BUZZ: Octogenarian divorcee had headline-making female troubles this year. Tried to get MTV executives at Viacom to make reality show about all-girl band Electric Barbarellas while lavishing lead singer Heather Naylor with gifts of CBS stock. One Wall Street analyst cited episode as evidence Redstone’s goals differ from that of shareholders. Similarly, he got Hollywood party girl Rohini Singh job at Showtime and gave her shares. Finally, CBS settled harassment complaint with female executive who accused Redstone of having temper tantrums. However, young women were not the only beneficiaries of his largesse. Harvard grad gave $1 million to his alma mater and $24 million to USC’s Keck School of Medicine. Built fortune after taking over family movie theater company in 1967 and parlaying that asset into controlling share of media giant Viacom in 1986. CBS and Viacom split in 2006 with Redstone retaining voting control of both.
