Efforts to spice up the culinary selections at Los Angeles International Airport took a leap forward Monday when a City Council committee awarded four out of five recommended airport dining contracts spanning Terminals 4, 5, 7 and 8.
Citing legal concerns, the five-member Board of Referred Powers tossed aside the largest food and beverage concession contract that was recommended for SSP America. That deal will now be rebid by LAX officials.
On a 4-1 vote, three food and beverage contracts were awarded to Miami-based Areas USA, a relative newcomer to the United States with operations at nine airports nationwide. Areas USA plans to open a variety of eateries at LAX, including Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, gang-intervention eatery Homegirl Cafe, downtown Los Angeles steakhouse Engine Co. 28 and Culver City-based Ford’s Filling Station.
