Janitors at LAX Vote to Authorize Strike

Just days before the Independence Day weekend, janitors servicing several airlines at Los Angeles International Airport have voted to authorize a strike, their union announced Tuesday.

A majority of 130 members of SEIU United Service Workers West, who work for airport contractors, voted Monday night to authorize a strike in order to put pressure on their employers as contract negotiations resume Wednesday.

The union’s contracts with ABM, AirServ and Flagship, which are subcontractors to United, American and international carriers in Terminal 2, are set to expire on Wednesday.

The union says management wants to cut healthcare benefits and reduce the number of paid holiday and sick days.

Officials for LAX and the contractors could not be reached for comment.
