Head of Stem Cell Facility to Step Down

The president and top scientist at California’s the $3 billion stem cell institute said late Thursday that he will retire within the next six months.

Zach Hall, 67, has been president of California Institute for Regenerative Medicine since March 2005.

Hall said he is not interested in the six-year term that the institute’s board offered and that he later agreed to stay on when it became difficult to attract other candidates due to stalled litigation regarding funding for the institute.

The San Francisco-based institute said it will begin a search for Hall’s replacement immediately.
