– Movielink LLC

and

CinemaNow Inc.

announced that they have signed deals with Hollywood studios to offer movie downloads for purchase on their Web sites on the same day that the DVDs are available in stores. Marina del Rey-based CinemaNow said it signed licensing agreements with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., while Santa Monica-based Movielink said it inked deals with MGM, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal and Warner Bros., the companies said in separate statements.

Films bought from CinemaNow must be watched on a computer or other download device; Movielink said its downloaded films may be stored on a computer hard drive to create a permanent archive or burned to a disc for playback on up to two more computers. Movielink, whose first major title available for download will be “Brokeback Mountain,” said prices will range from $20 to $30 per download. CinemaNow’s prices will range from $9.95 to $19.95.

– Amgen Inc.

completed its acquisition of Abgenix Inc., a Fremont-based company specializing in the development of human therapeutic antibodies. Final regulatory approvals were received in January, and Abgenix stockholders overwhelmingly approved the acquisition during a special meeting held on March 29.

In December, Abgenix agreed to be acquired by Thousand Oaks-based Amgen for $22.50 per share in cash. A week later, the two companies were hit by a shareholder class-action lawsuit that claimed Amgen’s $2.2 billion buyout offer for its rival is “inadequate.” Abgenix said at the time that the lawsuit is “without merit” and that it intends “to vigorously defend the action.”

– Health Net Inc.

said it completed its acquisition of the health plan assets of Long Beach-based health care company

Universal Care Inc.

on March 31, 2006. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. With this acquisition, L.A.-based Health Net adds approximately 17,000 Medi-Cal and Healthy Families beneficiaries to the approximately 692,000 beneficiaries it serves in nine California counties, including Los Angeles. Health Net will also add about 8,000 Medicare Advantage beneficiaries and 86,000 commercial members. All of the members will be transitioned from Universal Care to Health Net in stages over the next three months.
