Local Venture Capital Investing Jumps

Venture capital investing in Los Angeles area rose in the third quarter from the year-earlier period, according to figures released Monday by VentureOne and Ernst & Young LLP.


Fifteen companies based in the L.A. area raised a total of $88.67 million during the third quarter, compared with nine deals totaling $74.5 million in the year-ago period, according to the Quarterly Venture Capital Report.


Deal value and volume fell from the second quarter, however, when 23 companies raised a total of $201.7 million.


Through Sept. 30, Los Angeles-based companies have raised $483.5 million from venture sources, up from $448.5 million in the year-earlier period.


Third-quarter deals included Monterey Park-based Kotura Inc. a provider of silicon photonic component, which received $13 million, and Los Angeles-based Sennari Entertainment, a mobile phone software developer, which received $5 million.


Nationally, third quarter venture capital investing increased from the year-ago period the first year-over-year rise in 2005. The VentureOne survey counted 555 completed deals that raised $5.49 billion, about 9 percent higher than the amount raised a in the third quarter of 2004.
