Stocks fell after rising slightly in the morning on Monday amid a light schedule of corporate and economic news and a mixed batch of earnings reports.

In midafternoon trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 13.45, or 0.1 percent, to 10,702.68. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index was down 3.48, or 0.3 percent, at 1,199.55. The Nasdaq lost 10.73, or 0.5 percent, to 2,075.93.

Fears of rising budget deficits kept Monday’s advance minimal despite the dollar’s strong showing and falling oil prices. Light, sweet crude for March delivery fell 81 cents to $45.67 a barrel in midday trade on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
