What to Watch This Weekend

A look at this weekend’s biggest new movie releases.

MILES AHEAD – While the marriage of Miles Davis failed to survive his drug use, domestic violence, and infidelity, the jazz legend’s career continued to thrive, as depicted in this biopic. Don Cheadle stars, writes, directs, and produces this passion project, which explores the dark side of the music genius as well as the huge talent that made him a legend. Ewan McGregor co-stars as a journalist chronicling the trumpeter’s chaotic life.

GOD’S NOT DEAD 2 – A high-school history teacher gets in trouble after giving a lesson comparing the words of Jesus Christ to those of Martin Luther King Jr. The ensuing court case escalates from a debate over how religion should be taught in schools into one about the existence of God, pitting evangelical Christians against atheists on the courthouse steps. Melissa Joan Hart stars as the teacher on trial.

MEET THE BLACKS – America’s first Latino President, El Bama, turns out to be a gun-toting maniac and introduces a new law making all crime legal for one day. This parody of “The Purge” horror films sees the trigger-happy commander in chief, played by George Lopez, set out to shoot his least favorite Hollywood celebrities: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jay Leno. On the same day, the Black family moves into their new home in a Beverly Hills gated community. Instead of the quiet life they were expecting, the Blacks are confronted by chainsaw-wielding madmen.
