Entertainment reporter Sandro Monetti’s business take on this weekend’s new movie releases.
SUFFRAGETTE – After working in an English laundry since she was a little girl and becoming the best employee there, Carey Mulligan’s character begins to question why her boss thinks it’s OK to pay his female workers less than the men and molest them whenever he likes. By standing up for herself, she paves the way for a breakthrough in women’s rights.
BURNT – Bradley Cooper’s celebrity chef cooks up trouble for himself with his womanizing, substance abusing, tantrum throwing ways and realizes he must get his act together in order to return to the top of the super competitive restaurant business.
ROCK THE KASBAH – Bill Murray plays a down on his luck Van Nuys talent agent who lies to prospective clients, telling them he discovered Madonna in order to win their signature. But he thinks he has found his ticket to big-time success when he discovers a pop singer from that hotbed of musical ability: Afghanistan.
THE LAST WITCH HUNTER – After 800 years hunting witches, Vin Diesel’s immortal warrior character is good at his job, if a little bored. But he finds a fresh challenge – to take revenge on an evil sorcerer who just killed his business partner.
JEM & THE HOLOGRAMS – After becoming a viral video sensation, a teenage singer and her backup group are whisked off to Los Angeles by a record label that gives the band Hollywood makeovers aimed at making them the next superstar girl group. Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun is executive producer of this live-action film, which is based on the 1980s cartoon series.
