Although lawn remodeling rebates prompted many Los Angeles homeowners to replace their grass with native California plants and other drought-friendly forms of landscaping, budget cuts at the Metropolitan Water District could mean those incentives would dry out.

The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that the MWD’s proposed budget for the next two fiscal years would total $59 million for conservation programs, composed of $27 million next year and $32 million for the year after that. That allocation would probably be designated for rebates on water-conserving devices, such as high-efficiency toilets and washing machines.

There are no plans to reopen a turf rebate program, according to an MWD spokesperson. It would be up to the MWD board to decide if financial incentives for tearing up their lawns would be brought back in the future.
