Traffic was up at the Port of Long Beach last month, with nearly 9 percent more cargo moving through the port than during the same month last year, according to figures released Thursday.

In all, 530,313 containers moved through the port in October, with big gains in imports and exports. Exports rose 13 percent and imports were up 15 percent. The number of empty cargo containers shipped out of the port fell by 7 percent.

The improved October numbers are good news for Long Beach, where cargo traffic has fallen in most months this year and is down 3 percent for the year.
