SpaceX appears is position to win its first contract for a military satellite launch after its main competitor declined to submit a bid.
The Washington Post has reported that United Launch Alliance, SpaceX’s rival, would not bid on the contract to send Pentagon satellites into space, ending a period of near total dominance of national security launches for the company.
The Post reports that United Launch, a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Boeing, declined to put in a bid after Congress moved to phase out the use of its Russian-made engines for national security launches as a result of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Hawthorne-based SpaceX, the commercial spacecraft and rocket developer led by Elon Musk, is now the only bidder for the Air Force contract to send a next generation GPS satellite into space.
