Snapchat Confirms Bitstrips Acquisition

Snapchat of Venice has confirmed that it has acquired Bitmoji app maker Bitstrips of Toronto.

The deal was a mix of cash and stock valued “in the ballpark” of $100 million, reported Fortune when the news broke in March. At the time, Snapchat declined to comment.

Bitstrips’ Bitmoji app makes personalized cartoons that users can share through various chat services, such as Apple’s iMessage and Facebook’s Messenger.

Snapchat said in a blog post Tuesday that the Bitmoji app can now be linked with its app, so that users can send each other cartoons.

Snapchat, which has raised more than $ $2.6 billion in outside funding, also acquired animation app Looksery of Ukraine for a reported $150 million in September. That app overlays pictures and videos with motion graphics that can turn users into virtual zombies, give them bug eyes, or allow rainbows to spew from their mouths, among other visual effects.
