Report: High Pay, High Demand for Software Engineers

The need for software engineers extends far beyond Silicon Beach, as businesses of all kinds work to bolster their online presence, according to a new report.

Glassdoor, a job and recruiting site based in Mill Valley, on Monday released a list of the 15 highest-paid jobs in Los Angeles County that were listed on its website over the course of the year ending July 27. And the most staggering number may be the amount of job openings for one of those top positions – software engineers.

As of Aug. 1, the website listed 1,966 openings in that field, compared with anywhere from a few dozen to a few hundred for the other highest-paid jobs.

“Companies of all shapes and sizes are looking to hire software engineers,” said Allison Berry, community expert at Glassdoor. “Even though Los Angeles does have a growing tech industry, companies across all industries are hiring for these positions.”

As for pay, software engineers came in at No. 4 with a median salary of $95,000. The other top spots are solutions architect, at No. 1 with a $130,000 median salary, and attorney and professor, at $125,000 and $99,000, respectively.

Glassdoor’s study was based on more than 20,000 salary reports provided by its users, who can list their salaries and review companies they’ve worked for anonymously, Berry said. This was the first time the company has compiled the report, she said. More than 580,000 companies have a presence on the website either through their involvement or that of their employees, she added.

Still, because it isn’t a comprehensive job report, Glassdoor’s results were a bit different from the data compiled by the California Employment Development Department, which lists professions in the medical field among the bulk of the state’s top-paid jobs.

However, the real-time data provided by Glassdoor may offer some insight into employment trends, as more high-tech jobs move to the forefront.

Two surprises on that front, Berry said, were the inclusion of professor and research scientist on the highest-salaries report.

“We haven’t seen those job openings pop up on any of our lists before,” she said – as well as 3D artist. “It makes sense with Los Angeles being the center for design and film and art,” Berry said.
